Precautions and Requirements for Bridge Sound Barrier Installation
Currently, the infrastructure construction of many cities in China is being improved, and road traffic construction is also underway. The construction of highways and railways inevitably produces noise pollution. With the increasing environmental protection efforts in China, noise pollution has also been included in the scope of governance. One method to address road noise is to install sound barriers. These are categorized into roadbed sound barriers and bridge sound barriers depending on the type of road. Bridge sound barriers are generally installed on concrete barrier walls on both sides of the road. Depending on the thickness and shape of the road's crash barrier, bridge sound barriers are installed in various ways. For newly constructed bridges, the sound barrier steel columns are anchored into the cement barrier wall using grouting. Before grouting, the bridge anchoring structure should be checked for defects. If defects exist, reinforcement or strengthening should be carried out before grouting. The adhesive used for grouting should be Class A adhesive.
Because older bridges did not initially consider the installation of sound barriers, there are no pre-embedded holes in the cement walls. When installing sound barriers later, the base plate of the column can be made into an R-shape or U-shape to sit on the cement wall, depending on the thickness of the cement barrier wall. However, we do not recommend directly fixing the flat base plate to the cement wall using expansion bolts, as this has poor safety and stability. The installation of the bottom cover plate of the bridge sound barrier cannot be omitted; omitting this accessory will cause sound leakage at the bottom, greatly reducing the noise reduction capability of the sound barrier.
Regardless of the type of site, holes need to be drilled in the cement wall. When drilling, care should be taken to avoid cutting the internal steel bars of the original structure. After drilling, any remaining debris and dust should be cleaned from the holes. After the bridge sound barrier is installed, high-strength anchoring adhesive should be used for chemical bolts, with a splitting strength of no less than 8.5 MPa, a bending strength of no less than 50 MPa, and a compressive strength of no less than 60 MPa. The minimum anchoring spacing and margin should be no less than 120 mm.
Bridge sound barriers usually require the installation of anti-fall devices, especially those with transparent glass in the middle, to prevent typhoons and other non-human factors from causing harm to pedestrians under the bridge. The anti-fall rope is connected to the steel column inside the sound barrier frame. The steel wire rope should not be too tight; it should loosen naturally when the sound barrier is impacted. The anti-fall rope is fixed effectively at both ends, and its tensile load is greater than the breaking tensile force of the rope.
