What factors influence the design of noise barriers to improve sound attenuation?

Many factors affect the insertion loss of a noise barrier, such as its relative position, height, and shape. Highway noise barriers have various names and different materials.
(1) The horizontal position of the noise barrier should be as close as possible to the sound source. This helps to expand the barrier's shadow area, thereby improving sound attenuation. When other conditions remain unchanged, the shadow area near the sound source is larger than that far from the sound source.
(2) The higher the noise barrier, the larger the shadow area and the greater the sound attenuation. However, excessively high noise barriers may present structural, environmental, and cost issues; therefore, the barrier itself cannot be too high. When designing noise barriers, the topography should be fully utilized to increase the effective height of the barrier, achieving optimal results at minimal cost. Generally, when the sound source is high and the receiving area is low, the noise barrier attenuates sound better. For example, when a noise barrier is installed on an elevated bridge or utility bridge, the shadow area can be expanded because the height of the highway and overpass itself is used to increase the effective height of the barrier.
(3) The form of the noise barrier also significantly impacts sound attenuation. If the top of the noise barrier extends an eave in the direction of the sound source, it is equivalent to moving the entire noise barrier in the direction of the sound source, effectively increasing the depth and area of the shadow zone. This is a very effective and common method when the noise barrier cannot be placed too close to the sound source, such as on both sides of a road.
