01 Definition of Noise Barrier
A noise barrier is a device placed between the sound source and the receiver to significantly reduce the propagation of sound waves at the receiver's location, thereby reducing the impact of noise.
02 Summary of Basic Acoustic Knowledge
Sound shadow zone: The area where sound cannot directly reach when it encounters an obstacle (sound barrier). The sound shadow zone has a significantly attenuated area.
Propagation paths of sound: When the sound waves emitted by a noise source encounter a noise barrier, they will propagate along three main paths: diffraction, transmission, and reflection.
Diffraction and Transmission of Sound
Diffraction: The sound reaching the sound point from the top of the sound barrier is mainly affected by the height of the sound barrier. When the sound source position and the sensitive point remain unchanged, the higher the sound barrier, the better the noise reduction effect.
Transmission: The noise transmitted to the sensitive point after passing through the sound barrier is mainly affected by the sound insulation of the barrier board. When the sound insulation is 30dB(A), the transmission ≈ 0dB(A).
Reflection of Sound
Reflection: After reflection, the noise is transmitted to the sensitive point, mainly affected by the sound absorption coefficient of the reflecting surface.

04 Difference between Sound Barriers and Traffic Safety Facilities
Traffic safety facilities include: traffic signs, markings, guardrails, roadblocks, contour markings, guide signs, anti-glare facilities, etc.
Noise barriers are different from traffic safety facilities. Although they are installed on both sides of roads, their core function is to reduce noise levels on traffic lines. Therefore, noise barriers do not belong to traffic safety facilities, but to environmental protection products.
05 Applications of Noise Barriers
Noise barriers can not only control traffic noise pollution, but also have an attenuating effect on the noise of industrial production equipment. They are mainly used in areas such as highways, elevated roads, urban light rail transit, high-speed railways, etc., to control the impact of traffic noise on surrounding urban residential areas, and can also be used for sound insulation and noise reduction in factories and other noise sources.
